Greetings!
There probably won't really be a set release schedule to when I actually make one of these... I'm probably only going to save making these for when I think I have something worth providing an update on. I'm gonna be a college student soon enough, so I'm gonna be pretty busy in the coming year, but I don't want people to think that I'm doing nothing in between my frequent long gaps of radio silence.
As for this newsletter, I'm just gonna talk about where each of my personal projects are currently...
Honestly, of the things I'm working on, this one is probably the slowest moving... There's no beating around the bush with that, that's just how it is.
I'm fairly certain this is the last iteration of Dess and Asriel's sprites that I will do for the time being. There isn't really a whole lot I can say about this...
I know the basics of what I want to include for this project, meaning mechanics, vague story beats relating to the characters, and very basic locations... But, beyond that, I'm at a bit of an impasse when it comes to writing an actual story out of it.
I did actually finish a very rough outline for the story from start to finish, but it really isn't my favorite... Hopefully, when Chapter 5 comes out, it'll give me some cool ideas for where I wanna take this. For now, though, there's not a whole lot I can do.
I'll leave it at that for now...
There isn't actually a whole lot I'd like to share about this right now, but what I can say is that Animosity is going well. Here's an unorganized information dump about it...
The song itself is going to be fully redone from the REDUX version.
Chromatics and voice lines are going to be updated.
The events of the song are fully planned out for the different phases, save for specifics about the ending.
The first phase's opponent sprites are done, but some unique animations still need to be finalized.
The background art for the phases are still in the concept art stage.
I've made a pretty sizeable dent in the art that needs to get done, but there's still a long way to go...
In short... Still working on it! It will be playable! Eventually...! I've been working on this for a while now, but only really in my spare time. It's only really in the last couple months that it's been picking up steam...
Since it's still in a pretty early state, I still can't really give a reliable time estimate of when it'll come out. All I can really say is that it will come out... At some point... Hopefully next time, I'll have a little bit more to say about this one.
(Also, this song as a really, really, really long history of going between various mods, dating all the way back to 2023... Next time, I'll see if I can dig up some of those scrapped things to put here.)
Of the things I've been working on recently, this one's actually been going pretty quick...! Indirectly, I mean. You'll see what I mean.
A week or two ago now, I finished all of the player sprites that you would regularly see in a playthrough of Sonic 1. That means, if you were to put ROM in Sonic 1, you could play through the game start to finish without seeing any regular Sonic sprites. Isn't that neat?
There is still one or two unique sprites I need to add for the regular gameplay. That, and the plethora of sprites I need to make for some unique scenes...
As for the levels, I have about half of them figured out palette-wise. The levels themselves are going to have some layout changes as well, but we haven't gotten to that yet... We'll figure that out when we get there... As for the badniks, there's concepts for just about all of the ones that will be changed. (there's a couple I probably need to revisit, since they're maybe a little bit too silly...)
As for eggman...
...
Well. Wait and see.
Overall, with the game, we're in a pretty good spot art-wise. Once I've got the brunt of the difficult part over, I'll start looking to see about getting the game itself made.
I can't reliably give a good time estimate for when it'll come out... I can say for sure though that the plan for the game is set in stone now, and has been for, what, a year or two now...? Not anytime soon, but closer than you think.
You can see it... off in the distance...
Flickering.
Oh, and one more thing...!
It'll be a pretty long time still until the game comes out. I can't guarantee this'll release soon, either, but it's definitely going to be out before the main game...!
That's right!!! A playable version of the actual rom hack...!!!
I wasn't the one that started this project. The people doing this one, Chron and N1ck, actually approached me about it. I don't know rom hacking, so I can't really provide much help beyond spriting and general pointers about what some stuff looks like or how stuff would go...
Of the projects I've been working on, this one started the most recently, and has been going by far the quickest. This is what I meant about the SNC.ROM game going pretty quick... The sprites here can carry over to the other, so they're both making progress.
Everything player-wise is basically good to go, with every sprite I've made for him thus far bring properly implemented. His full moveset is in the game, as well as the accompanying "Temperature meter" mechanic. (Nobody probably remembers this, but in old mockups of the game, I actually gave the temperature meter it's own row on the hud, right under the ring counter... This took up a lot of space on the screen though, and I wanted it to feel a little more subtle, so I ended up having it under the lives counter instead, since it just so happened to fit.)
With player stuff in a good place, what remains is the remaining palette swaps, unique badnik behavior, level layout changes, and the ending.
When this releases, it'll be the first real thing that's released with ROM in it. Even thinking about that...
It's been three years, and in that time, I've had a lot of time to think about SNC.ROM and the events of this story, and I've been dying to find a way to share what I've been thinking. It's been brewing in the back of my mind. For all this time.
(I'm not kidding...)
That's all I have to say about this for now. Serious thank you to Chron and N1ck for this!!!
That DELTARUNE project I have yet to come up with a good name for is still being worked on. Animosity is still being worked on, bit by bit. Both the SNC.ROM game and the rom hack are being worked on.
In short, still working on things!!! Promise I'm not entirely neglecting these for other projects!!! Thank you for reading!!!
